I sat in the lounge, all alone like I normally was, huddled up on the couch with a book in my hand. My eyes scanned the words, floating over them as if they were nothing, not really taking them in. I didn’t pay attention to the book. I sat in silence, some people felt weird about it but it made me feel safer. If there was someone in the house I would be able to hear them or would have sensed their energy’s earlier. But since my house echoed in silence as I ‘read’, when the sound of a car door violently slamming shut with a lot of force behind it and someone cursing, gave me a fright. It forced me to jump in my seat, nearly dropping the book.
A voice floated through the open window and reached my ears. It was distinctly male, familiar and very angry, I sat there but couldn’t quiet manage to place it as I listened to him swear. It was almost funny in a way. “You stupid piece of junk!”
I scuttled up off from the couch quickly, mostly out of curiosity and stared at the window. I wanted to know who the person was. I quickly snuck over to the window. I pulled the curtain aside so I could see clearly out. I saw a black car outside my house, steam billowing up from under the hood. The car looked familiar to me too. I could see the shape of a person through the steam but I couldn’t see their face. I could still hear him though.
“I just got you fixed you piece of crap! What the hell is going on with my car!” then there was a bang, as if he had kicked the vehicle or something.
I blinked as I realized that the voice belonged to my Bio partner. The voice belonged to Blayde. He didn’t look like him considering that he was decked out in his usual black shirt, dark jeans and boots. He had a baseball cap on his head, turned backwards, meaning his hair was pressed down flat but curled up around the edges. He was storming as he came around of the front of the steaming car. He shoved the hood up, I couldn’t hear him but I guessed that he was muttering curses under his breath.
I watched him as he tried to find out what was wrong with the car. It seemed fascinating to me as I watched him reaching out and touching parts of the engine and pull away quickly from the heat of the metal as they singed his fingertips. I laughed as Blayde raged on. It was so amusing. I hadn’t seen him act like this before.
Suddenly the hood slammed down with an echoing bang. “Damn-it!” he cursed and he turned to the house.
I couldn’t hide behind the curtain quick enough. I didn’t want him to know that I lived here, or that I was watching him but it was too late. Our eyes locked. Blayde’s hands slowed as he wiped his hands on his jeans then eventually they stopped and stayed against his thighs. A look of surprise and confusement flashed over his face before amusement took place along with a smile. He started walking to the front door.
I pulled away from the window and walked to the front door. I pulled the door open to see him climb up the steps of the veranda. “What happened?” I asked.
He paused on the last step and looked at me, sweeping the inky hair out of his eyes. “Isn’t it considered polite to say ‘hello’ when someone comes to the door?”
“Not when it's you.” I snapped back but my chest fluttered and my stomach did somersaults. Why did he have to make me feel this way? I didn’t want to.
He placed a hand over his chest, over his heart and winced, speaking dryly. “Ouch, it hurts. Truly it does.”
I rolled my eyes at his sarcasm, used to it now. “Good.”
He made the final move onto the veranda, looking out onto the road to his car. His face was a mask of disgust. “That’s the second time in a week.”
I leaned against the door frame, still holding the door as I contemplated silently on slamming the door in his face. “Maybe you need to get a new car.”
He looked at me from the corner of his eye, his face still turned to the car. “Does it look like I’m made of money?”
I pulled a face. “Considering the wad of cash I saw on the side of the pool table that night, yes.”
“You’re going to kill me with your kind words you know that?” Blayne smirked at me. It was that seductive smile. The one that made me weak, made my heart beat faster. The hints of desire that stared at me through his eyes...
I couldn’t let myself feel that way! I looked away, back at the car, breaking the eye contact.
“Well they’re the only ones that you’re going to get.” I snapped.
He sighed, bowing his head and shook it slightly. I could hear him laughing softly. He looked up. “Can I use your phone then?”
I froze. I didn’t want him in my house. “Why?”
“My phone's dead.”
“All your things like to die on you don’t they?” I said to no one in particular but he answered anyway.
“Of course they do. They can’t handle my charm.” He flashed me a grin, showing off white teeth.
I rolled my eyes. “I don’t believe you.”
“Oh?”
“Your cell phone.”
“What about it?” he asked curiously.
“Stop avoiding the question!” I snapped.
“If there was a question asked I would have answered.” He replied.
“Do you like wasting my time?” I snapped.
“Yes.”
“Urgh!” I threw my hands up in defeat. I moved aside. “It’s in the kitchen.” The quicker I let him use the phone the faster it was to have him out, I realized.
He walked in, giving me another one of his redeeming smiles.
